Bahaa EL-Gendy Adjunct Assistant Professor, Medicinal Chemistry Pharmaceutical and Administrative Sciences bahaa.elgendy@uhsp.edu Education Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA Major: Organic Chemistry Minor: Pharmaceutical Sciences Advisor: Professor Alan R. Katritzky GPA: 4.0/4.0 Master of Science in Organic Chemistry, Benha University, Benha, Egypt Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Benha University, Benha, Egypt Specialty Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery Organic Synthesis Current Research The main focus of Dr. Elgendy's research group is medicinal chemistry of nuclear hormone receptors. We utilize our knowledge of organic synthesis, computational chemistry, and medicinal chemistry to design and synthesize novel modulators for various nuclear receptors. There is a lack of selective and efficacious chemical probes for many of these targets that hinders their clinical translatability. We aim to develop safe therapeutics that can target some of these receptors, namely REV-ERB, ERR, and LXR and to validate these targets as putative targets for the treatment of challenging diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis, cancer, and Fatty liver diseases. Other areas of research interests: Synthetic methodologies and development of anti-microbial agents to combat multi-drug resistant bacteria. Vita Highlights Dr. Elgendy is the recipient of several awards including: Certificate of Outstanding Achievement from University of Florida (2008 and 2010), Proctor & Gamble Award for Excellence in Graduate Research, University of Florida (2010), Benha University Prize for Scientific Excellence (2015 and 2016), The Best Scientific Publication Award from Benha University (2015), The Egyptian State Prize in Chemical Sciences, the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology of Egypt, 2016, and Presidential Medal of Excellence (First Class) for outstanding contribution from the President of Egypt, 2017. Dr. Elgendy is the former Co-Chair of the Egyptian Young Academy of Sciences (EYAS) (2015-2017), Young Affiliate of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) (2015-2019), member of the Global Young Academy (GYA) (2017-2022), and affiliate of the African Academy of Sciences (2018-2022). Interesting Facts Bahaa Elgendy, Ph.D., holds a primary appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Administrative Sciences at the College and a secondary appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). Bahaa received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry from Benha University, Egypt. He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry under Prof. Alan R. Katritzky from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL.
